Why Ryan Rickelton Was Recalled After Being Caught – Klaasen’s Wicketkeeping Error Explained

Rickelton Reprieved After Klaasen’s Glove Error in MI vs SRH

Mumbai Indians clinched a crucial 4-wicket win over SunRisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday in IPL 2025, but the match had its turning point in the seventh over during a controversial dismissal involving Ryan Rickelton.

Rickelton, who was batting well for Mumbai, appeared to be caught by Pat Cummins at cover after a delivery from Zeeshan Ansari. As per usual play, he began walking back to the dressing room, and Suryakumar Yadav had even walked to the crease to bat next. However, a dramatic twist unfolded.

The fourth umpire rushed to the field, halting Rickelton just before he reached the dressing room. The third umpire had been reviewing the delivery, and it was found that SunRisers Hyderabad wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen had committed a rare and costly mistake.

What Was Klaasen’s Error?

According to MCC Law 27.3.1, a wicketkeeper must remain completely behind the stumps from the moment the ball comes into play until it touches the batter or passes the stumps. Klaasen’s gloves were found to be in front of the stumps before the ball had passed the batter — a clear violation.

This led to the on-field umpire calling a no-ball under MCC Law 27.3.2, and Rickelton was called back to resume his innings. This incident not only gave Mumbai Indians a lifeline but also swung the momentum in their favor.

Mumbai Indians Chase Down 163 with Ease

Chasing a target of 163, Mumbai Indians cruised to victory with 11 balls to spare. Will Jacks top-scored with a quickfire 36 off 26 balls, while Rickelton, thanks to the reprieve, added 31 off 23.

Contributions from Rohit Sharma (26), Suryakumar Yadav (26), Tilak Varma (21), and Hardik Pandya (21*) ensured a comfortable win for MI. Earlier, SRH had posted 162/5, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 40 and Aniket Verma’s late 18 off 8 pushing them past the 160-mark.

Points Table Update

Following this result, Mumbai Indians stay seventh on the IPL 2025 points table, while SunRisers Hyderabad drop to ninth.
