Will Wankhede Stadium Get a Rohit Sharma Stand? MCA to Decide on April 15

Will Rohit Sharma Get a Stand at Wankhede? MCA to Decide on April 15

Mumbai, India – April 8, 2025 — The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is all set to take a major decision regarding naming a stand at Wankhede Stadium after Team India captain Rohit Sharma. The verdict will be announced during the upcoming MCA Apex Council meeting on April 15, where Rohit’s name will compete with seven other Mumbai legends for the honour.

This move comes after the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) named a stand after Virat Kohli at Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2019. The MCA may follow suit for Mumbai’s homegrown hero, Rohit Sharma, who has had an exceptional record in recent ICC tournaments.

Rohit Sharma: A Strong Contender for the Honour

Rohit Sharma, who is currently playing in IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians, has been a vital part of Indian cricket’s success over the last decade. Under his captaincy:

India won the T20 World Cup in June 2024 in Barbados

India clinched the Champions Trophy in March 2025 in Dubai

He also led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup

These achievements make him the only cricketer from Mumbai to lead India to two ICC title wins within a year, strengthening his case for this honour.

Who Are the Other Names in the Running?

According to a report by The Indian Express, the MCA has received eight official proposals from club members. Apart from Rohit Sharma, the list includes:

Sharad Pawar (Former MCA President), Vilasrao Deshmukh (Former MCA President), Ajit Wadekar (Former India Captain), Eknath Solkar (Late India Cricketer), Dilip Sardesai (Late Mumbai Cricketer), Padmakar Shivalkar (Former Mumbai Spinner), Diana Edulji (Former India Women’s Captain)

MCA President Ajinkya Naik confirmed, “There have been suggestions from members, and the final decision will be taken by the general body of the Mumbai Cricket Association.”

Why MCA Faces a Tough Decision

Currently, only one unnamed Grand Stand remains inside Wankhede Stadium — located above the President’s Box. The other stands are already dedicated:

North Stand – Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar

West Stand – Vijay Merchant

East Stand – Sunil Gavaskar

With eight names vying for a single spot, the MCA is in a tough spot. Each name carries historical significance, making the final call even more challenging.

Final Verdict Awaited

All eyes will be on the MCA Apex Council meeting on April 15, where the association will decide whether Rohit Sharma joins the elite list of Mumbai legends to have a stand named in their honour at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
