Yashasvi Jaiswal skips slip cordon drills after drop-filled Leeds Test: Coach cites sore hands, confidence

Jaiswal Skips Slip Practice After Leeds Drop Woes

India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was not seen taking part in slip catching drills during Monday’s training session in Birmingham ahead of the second Test against England. His absence sparked conversation after a below-par fielding effort in the first Test at Leeds, where he dropped four catches that proved costly.

Despite scoring a fine century with the bat, Jaiswal faced criticism for his errors in the slip cordon. Reports from Edgbaston suggest that the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul were actively involved in slip catching practice, while Jaiswal was kept out of it.

Assistant coach explains decision

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the development, suggesting the move was made to protect Jaiswal’s confidence and manage his workload.

“Yashasvi has been a very good catcher for us. His absence is not permanent. His hands are quite sore and we want to give him a break from the slip cordon for a bit. It’s about managing confidence and exploring other options,” said ten Doeschate during the media interaction.

He further explained the strategy behind trying new players in the slip cordon, especially with the possibility of playing two spinners in the upcoming Test.

“In England, you’re always going to have four catchers at some stage. So we want more guys to be versatile and ready for different roles. If Jaiswal is fit and confident, he’ll be back in the mix,” he added.

Experts back Jaiswal after fielding errors

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif came to Jaiswal’s defence after the Leeds Test, pointing out that the opener had tape on his fingers, possibly due to an injury. Kaif felt this might have affected his grip and timing.

Australian legend Greg Chappell also weighed in, saying the dropped catches did not appear to be technical flaws. “He may be playing through an injury or just needs a little confidence. These things happen even to the best,” Chappell said.

India will face England in the second Test beginning July 2 at Edgbaston, and it remains to be seen whether Jaiswal will return to the slips or be placed elsewhere on the field.
