The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been led by Virat Kohli for the past week in the absence of Faf du Plessis, who is available to bat but has been unable to play in the team’s last three games due to injury. Since Kohli’s reappointment as captain, RCB has won two games while losing to Kolkata Knight Riders earlier this week.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was questioned if one might see Virat Kohli donning the captaincy cap in international colors as well – if the usual skipper isn’t available. The great batter is returning in the leadership role to step in for Du Plessis. Intriguingly, Shastri went back to the fifth Test match that had been postponed against England at Edgbaston, where Jasprit Bumrah had captained the team after Rohit had been ruled out due to a Covid-19 infection days before.
Shastri claimed that he would have recommended Kohli for the captaincy of the team if he had still been the head coach.
Ravi Shastri Said
“I thought he (Kohli) would (lead the side). Once Rohit was injured (Covid-19 infection), I thought he would be asked. If I was still there, I would’ve. I’m sure Rahul might have done the same thing; I don’t know, I haven’t spoken to him, but I would’ve recommended the board that it’s only fair he leads because he was part of the team that was leading 2-1 in the series. And he probably could’ve gotten the best out of players,” Shastri told ESPNCricinfo.
Shastri responded that it is an “honour to lead the country” when asked if Kohli would have any reservations about captaining the team once more.
“Not at all. It’s an honor leading your country. These are circumstances where you got to put your best foot forward. Your regular captain is injured, he’s not part of the team, so seeing what’s at stake, beating England in England, 2-1 up… how many teams beat England and Australia in the same year, overseas?” said Shastri further.
