India’s success in major ICC events has been a topic of discussion among cricket fans, and the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India could be their best chance to break the drought. With India being the sole host of the event, they will have the home advantage and the backing of their passionate fans. The last time India won an ICC event was in 2013, and since then they have come close on several occasions, making it to the finals of the 2014 World T20, 2017 Champions Trophy, and 2021 World Test Championship.
Gavaskar’s warning to Indian players
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed concern over the impact of injuries and frequent resting of players on India’s chances in the upcoming World Cup. With several key players struggling with injuries, Gavaskar believes that the team’s chances of success could be compromised if they are forced to constantly chop and change their line-up.
Gavaskar also criticized the approach of resting players for important series, arguing that it could have a negative impact on their performance in the World Cup. While some Indian players have been given breaks to manage their workload and avoid burnout, Gavaskar believes that this approach could ultimately backfire.
The legendary batsman also warned that another World Cup defeat could spell the end of some Indian players’ careers. With the pressure on the Indian team to deliver a long-awaited World Cup victory, Gavaskar stressed the importance of consistency and stability in team selection and preparation.
“In a World Cup year any match missed means preparation gets hampered as the balance of the team gets affected. Another failure to win a World Cup will have repercussions that could possibly end a few international careers and that should be a red flag for those talking burnout and missing games for India.” Gavaskar recently wrote in his column for Mid-Day.
