Stokes just declared his retirement from one-day international cricket, and he played his final match on Tuesday, July 19, which was lost to South Africa in Durham by a score of 62 runs.
The all-rounder decided to end his ODI career because he believed it would be impossible to play in all three formats of cricket and for a franchise. Stokes, who was recently named the Test team’s captain, has decided to shift his attention away from the somewhat stagnant 50-over game and towards the other two formats.
Nasser Hussain, a former captain of England, believes Ben Stokes did not want to perform at a reduced level in all three formats.
Hussain said
Nasser Hussain stated for his column in the Daily Mail that the Durham player wants to perform at his best and prevent a decline in performance levels like Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson:
“Some might suggest 80% of Stokes is enough but the problem is that once you play at 80%, it can lead lead to a drop in performance in another format. Just look at what has happened to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, for example. He doesn’t want to become stale.”
Virat Kohli has undoubtedly suffered from the strain of serving as the team’s captain and a key player for many years. In an effort to restore his lost touch, the star batter gave up the captaincy in all formats last year. He is also being given a lighter workload.
In his final One-Day International for England, the World Cup champion played poorly. Stokes gave up 44 runs in five overs while playing on his home pitch. Later, the all-rounder left for just five after missing a reverse sweep off Aiden Markram while coming out to bat and chasing 334.
Hussain said that the southpaw didn’t appear to be totally fit in his most recent game:
“Compared to years gone by, when he was fully fit, Tuesday was drastically different. After a couple of balls he was limping off towards the side of the pitch, not fully maintaining his momentum through the crease and down it.”
