In IPL 2023, MS Dhoni stated that he is not “complaining” about not getting to bat as long as the top-order performs its duties and leads Chennai Super Kings to victory. But that doesn’t mean Dhoni isn’t making a difference in the game. If not with the bat, he is doing it from behind the wicket while donning the gloves in his hands. Not to mention his leadership skills as a captain. In front of his home crowd at the Chepauk, Dhoni, who had a difficult day as a keeper in CSK’s most recent game against RCB, had a field day against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
On Friday, Dhoni was engaged with every aspect of the game that a keeper can. He made a quick catch, caused a stumping, and finished the play with a run-out. The CSK head coach, Stephen Fleming, referred to the keeping versus SRH as a “masterclass” because it was that brilliant. The former captain of New Zealand also said Dhoni “doesn’t get enough” credit for his retention.
Fleming said
“It’s a natural talent. I don’t think he gets enough credit for his keeping but to be honest, he is an absolute craftsman, an absolute masterclass behind the stumps and often goes unnoticed with all the things he does,” Fleming said during the post-match conference.
Dhoni took a brilliant catch to dismiss SRH captain Aiden Markram in the 13th over of the SRH innings off the bowling of Maheesh Theekshana. The catch also enabled Dhoni to surpass Quinton de Kock and take the lead for the T20 cricket keeper position (208 catches).
“I felt it was a fantastic catch. I was in such a wrong position. Just because we wear gloves, people think it’s easy. A long time back I still remember one game – Rahul Dravid was keeping and he caught one like that. With your skill set, you can’t take a catch like that. You have to be in a very wrong position to be able to take that kind of a catch,” Dhoni said.
