India lost an ODI series at home after a gap of almost 4 years. The last team to beat India in India was Australia in 2019 beaten the hosts 3-2. This loss too happened when India were leading the series 1-0.
The three-match series between the two teams entered the third ODI in Chennai knotted at one each. After winning the toss, Australia chose to bat first and scored 269 runs. India responded by being shut out for 248 runs. Sunil Gavaskar, a former captain of India, expressed his hope that his country would remember this before the World Cup, as the team will now split up for the Indian Premier League (IPL), which will begin on March 31.
Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar in the latest cricket news said that Australian fielders put pressure on Indian batters to play risky shots.
“It was the pressure created. They were not getting singles. The boundaries had dried up and they weren’t even getting singles. When that happens then you try and play something that you are not used to. That is something they will have to look at. But of course, now the IPL starts. This shouldn’t be forgotten. India sometimes makes the mistake of forgetting this, but this one shouldn’t be because, in the World Cup, we may face Australia again,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
Gavaskar added that a major factor in India’s failure was the inability to form any other significant partnerships outside the stand between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul and the opening pair between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. As Rohit and Gill set up a 65-run opening partnership, Kohli and Rahul scored 69 runs for the third wicket. Only Kohli was able to lead India to a half-century; he made 54 from 72 deliveries before slamming David Warner with an attempted lofted drive. The Match Prediction was in the balance when Kohli was batting with KL Rahul.
“When you are chasing a score of 270 or nearly 300, you need a partnership of about 90 or 100 and that will take you close. But that didn’t happen. Yes, there were a couple of partnerships, one between Rahul and Kohli, but then you wanted another similar or bigger stand. Fielding from Australia was outstanding. Their bowling was very good. It was tight, stump to stump, but their fielding was very good. That was the difference,” said Gavaskar.
