Virat Kohli, the poster boy of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has been fined 10% of his match fee for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during the team’s match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. According to the IPL Code of Conduct, players are not allowed to gesture or use language that is obscene, offensive, or insulting during a match. Kohli’s actions were deemed to be in violation of this code, and he was subsequently fined.
What did Kohli do?
A statement released by the Indian Premier League (IPL) confirmed that Virat Kohli, the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), had breached the IPL Code of Conduct under Article 2.2. The statement did not provide details about the incident that led to the violation, but media reports suggest that it could be related to Kohli’s celebration following the dismissal of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) middle-order batsman Shivam Dube during RCB’s match against CSK on Monday.
“Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli has been fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru,” said the IPL statement.
Dube was dismissed by RCB bowler Wayne Parnell, and Kohli was seen celebrating the wicket in an animated manner. While it is not clear if this was the incident that led to Kohli’s code of conduct violation, his behavior could be seen as a breach of the code, which prohibits players from showing excessive or prolonged celebrations on the field.
“Kohli admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the release further added.
