Thursday afternoon’s 2023 Indian Premier League encounter between the Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore ended in a 24-run loss for the Punjab Kings. The RCB compiled a respectable score of 174/4 in 20 overs after being asked to bat by PBKS’ acting skipper Sam Curran; their openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis put on a 137-run stand for the first wicket. The Kings’ reply was dismissed for 150 runs with ten deliveries remaining.
As a result of the Kings’ poor batting performance, bowling all-rounder Curran was forced to bat early in the innings. The top and middle orders collapsed, and the team was reduced to 43/4 during the powerplay. The other batter, Prabhsimran Singh, scored most of the runs in a partnership with Curran that appeared to stabilise the PBKS run-chase, but the team’s acting skipper lost his wicket very cheaply in the tenth over.
When discussing Sam Curran’s performance in Thursday’s game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virender Sehwag didn’t hold back.
Curran’s wicket was lost due to some careless running, and the bowling all-arounder was plainly upset with himself as he made his way back to the dressing room. And former India opener Virender Sehwag, who has previously served as both a player and a coach for Punjab Kings, took Curran to task for his sluggish running between the wickets.
Virender Sehwag said
“He’s an international player. But you can’t buy experience with 18 crore. It only comes when you play, when your hair turn white as you play under the hot sun,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
“We think just because he was bought for 18 crore, he will win you matches. But he doesn’t have that experience yet. It was poor running, there was no need for that. You’re captain, you should’ve stayed, tried to take it to the final overs. But again, the lack of experience cost him,” Sehwag further said.
